DIY Planter Box & a Bit of Crazy

If you follow me on Instagram, you already know that John's car was stolen and then in the ensuing police chase, smashed into  pole at about 60 mph. Needless to say they totaled his car. And here just over a week later, my friend and I were off to Orlando for the day and we got rear ended on our way to meet someone from Instagram. Fortunately my car is left with the most minor of dents and scratches, but seriously? Come on! Add a daughter graduating HS in about 3 weeks, my parents and John's parents will be flying out and a friend will also be coming out for her graduation. That means I have added work of getting everything in the house ready for all the company! Oh and did I mention John retires from the military in July which means, while I get the house ready, I have to keep in mind that we are moving in July? Can someone please come and clone me about 2 or 3 times?

Found via Pinterest

I also made a New Year Resolution to do one DIY type project a month in 2014 in hopes that it would help get my creative juices flowing while fixing up the house a bit for all the company we are about to have. I had these wicker storage boxes on either side of our entertainment center. I put pillows on top and used them as extra seating when we had company. But they were fairly cheap and after 8 years were a bit worn and frankly, not cute anymore.

I wanted to make a planter box for outside by the front door and thought, hmm  maybe I could repurpose one of these storage boxes into a planter box. So I ripped off the wicker, and John drilled some holes in the bottom and then using scrap wood we had in the garage we encased the frame of the storage bin and stained in with some stain we had and viola! A planter box.

Using wood scraps, we created the look of having used a 2x2 for the side frames,  And then we cut down some wood to create the look for using a 1x2 to frame it, From there if you want to make this, you would need Some thin wood paneling and nail it into your frame. Since our storage box already had that, we didn't need to worry about it.

Using some wood paneling we had, we cut it down into a square and then using wood glue and some fancy weights we had around, we glued the paneling onto the box and then stained the whole thing Dark Walnut by Rustoleum that we had bought for the the entertainment center we just DIY'd.

Sounds simple enough, right? But to be honest, it would have been easier if we went and bought the 2x2 and 1x2 and some more paneling to make this, rather than trying to create the look around an existing box. But by doing it this way, we were able to use scrap wood from previous projects and not spend a penny. That is always worth the extra effort, in my opinion.

I LOVE how it turned out! And ironically as I type this, I just had a maintenance person here at my house and he commented on my beautiful planter box and asked where I got it, because his wife would love one!

Disney World at Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival

John took me to Epcot at Disney World for the International Flower and Garden Festival for our 19 year anniversary yesterday. What an amazing experience. I'm a Disney fan, but not a huge fanatic. The idea of waiting in line for a 60 second ride is like torture to me. But a day walking around looking at beautiful flowers and enjoying great food and drinks and I'm in.

The flower sculptures are amazing, but the food and drinks were even better. They showcase seasonal foods around Epcot's World Showcase.

I can't believe we've been married 19 years. I remember going to Disney World for our honeymoon. It doesn't seem all that long ago.

The food pairings are all sample sizes. Since we knew we would be eating all around the world, John and I shared each sample. (Well except one, which I let John devour on his own.)

One of our stops was at the Lotus House in Epcot's China. We selected their vegetable spring rolls, Lychee aerated water and the South Sea Storm (Guava with light & dark rums). First off those spring rolls are the best I have ever had! They came with a sauce and I was in Heaven. I am seriously craving them today. John wanted to stop at the Smokehouse for BBQ & Brews in Epcot's American Adventure. He tried the pulled pork slider with cole slaw, which, since I don't eat meat, I let him enjoy. He also got some beer samples of Maduro from Cigar City Brewing and Billy's Chilies from Twisted Pine Brewing Company. I did taste the Billy's Chilies. They warned us to take a sniff first! Oh my Jalepeno's! It definitely had a kick and was surprisingly good. If you like food with a hot after taste, this is a must try.

Below are just a few of the other amazing foods we got to try yesterday.

At the Primavera Kitchen in Epcot's Italy. Three cheese manicotti and torta di ricotta.

Fluer de Lys in Epcot's France. Gnocchi Parisien à la Provençal and Rosé Pamplemousse Cocktail

Hanami in Epcot's Japan. Frushi which is pineapple, strawberries and melon rolled with coconut rice, served with raspberry sauce, sprinkled with toasted coconut and whipped cream on the side. This was sooo good! It was gone in about 11 seconds.

Some of the enchanting character topiaries created by Epcot.

We had an amazing day walking through the world at Epcot yesterday and now I really can't wait for next year. I was impressed with the amount of Vegetarian Friendly options they had. My only wish is that we could get the recipes for these amazing dishes so we can replicate them at home. If you are planning a Disney trip, the end of April is the perfect time to come. The lines after Spring breaks are short, the weather is perfect and if you add in this festival, it's makes an already dream trip to Disney even more magical. They have a food an wine festival each Fall, and now I am definitely putting that on my calendar as a must do. I can only imagine just how good that will be.

Evolution Mani & Nail Shields

I needed a quick and simple mani for today. I chose Evolution and added an accent nail using a Nail Shield by Ally Kat Nails. I found her on Instagram and just loved her designs. You can find them on her site http://www.alleycat.bigcartel.com

I'm doing today's blog post on the go, since John is taking me to Disney World today to celebrate our 19th Anniversary! We went to Disney on our honeymoon, so it's the perfect place to celebrate!

Splatter Mani for Run or Dye

Last Saturday, my friends and I participated in the Run or Dye 5K. This race raises money for local charities and the one near us was benefiting the American Cancer Society. To make it a family fun event, you are sprayed with powered dye while you run. I did a similar race last year, so I couldn't pass up the opportunity to do this with my friends.

This time around I wanted to do nails special for the 5K. I decided on a splatter mani. I had seen how to's on them in the past, and to be honest, the mess just turned me off from even trying it. But in the end, I thought this would be the perfect mani for the Run or Dye. I used the Polishaholic's Splatter Mani Tutorial, which you can see here.

I really liked how it came out! It was perfect for the event.

I used Tempest for my base and then splattered Love at First Sight, Feelin' Froggy, Scandalous, Wack Slacks and Falling Hard. I probably could have cleaned up a little more, but it was late Friday night and I was exhausted. Laziness won!

All clean before the event and ready to go!  Don't ask me what's up with this pose. HA!

Did someone grab my ass? Dewey? Did you just grab my ass? (Points for you if you get this reference!)

Apparently my ass is grab worthy!

After, and boy was that green difficult to get off!

It was a fun day and I can't wait for the next one. Check out Run or Dye's webpage for info on all the dates and locations. This is especially fun to do with friends and family.

Open toe shoe season is finally here! Are your toes ready? You all know how much I love Target! I was checking out what new sandals might be in store and came across a few cute neutral styles I love.

These adorable Simone block sandals are perfect for anything shorts, sundresses or skirts. I can picture these with a totally adorable pair of bermuda style shorts and a cute top while wearing New Day on my toes.

I'm all about these Pembroke wedge sandals during the warmer months. I tend to wear wedge sandals more than any other type of sandal, and I'm always on the look out for a cut pair. I love the gold touches on these and Falling Hard seems like a perfect accent.

Flat fanatics will love these brushed gold Merona Tori sandals with an ankle strap. Yes I do wear flat sandals! I think it's the only time of the year, I reach for flats on a regular basis.  John's taking me to Disney for the day on Tuesday for our 19th Wedding anniversary. 19 years ago we went to Disney for our honeymoon and it was amazing! We even came home with a souvenir! She graduates high school in May! LOL! We won't be coming home with a souvenir this time, but we'll celebrate the last 19 years and toast to many more to come! I need to get to Target and try to find these and get Evolution on my toes!
Are you ready for sandal season? Let me know in the comments below! The It's  A New Day Collection is still available for pre-sale, but it's almost sold out. If you want to secure your set, order now!

Front Porch Update

I hate to admit it, but if you were to come to my house anytime in the last two years, you would probably turn your nose at my front porch. When we moved in I put two chairs and a little table there. And I had every intention of actually decorating it. But I get so busy between home life, work life and friend life, that I barely have time for laundry much less decorating. Little by little I am tackling each space, one at a time. We have a pretty big Summer coming up - Kat graduates high school, John retires from a 20 year career in the military, Coco turns 15 and wants a Quinceañera, and I turn 40! These events (minus my Bday) means family and friends will be flying into town to celebrate! So even though we have an impending move, it was time to get off my butt and get my house decorated. I have been trying to keep a move in mind and only get things that can be used in multiple rooms or multiple ways. I have debated on taking care of the front porch, and every time I pull into my driveway, I am just utterly disappointed. As if someone should see the despair and come fix it for me! What? I can dream!

The hose on the front porch drives me crazy! Who puts a hose on the front porch? I HATE it there! I think is should stay in the back or at the least the side of the house, not as a greeting to your guests! I wish John would leave it in the garage, but noooo it stays on the front porch. We used to have two chairs and a table. But first the table broke, and then one of the chairs. Age will do that to items, I suppose. Now this chair is breaking and is in desperate need of being stained. I did get that wall art at Kirklands when we moved in, But that's about where the decorating stopped.

Our doormat is so old and just bleh and then hiding in the side is the kids bike, which really needs to go! We need to give it to someone, anyone need a bike?

I decided enough was enough, and so using my amazingly awesome artistic skill, I drew up what I wanted my front porch to look like. I checked out Pinterest, but found absolutely nothing, except the idea for a plant box. I can't believe I came up empty handed on Pinterest! What the heck! I created a budget of $200, which I know is probably a bit low since I needed chairs and a table and they are so friggin' expensive, but that is what I had to work with. I was determined!

Being the ever patient girl that I am, I immediately went online and looked at what I could get for chairs under $75 or table and chairs for no more than $100. I began to think it was hopeless, but then I found these chairs at Lowes for $35 each, using my military discount, I was able to get both chairs for $66! Score! I found a hose planter at Target, and I grabbed it, but if John promises me that he will keep the hose in the garage, this may go back. I went $26 over budget and it was 100% due to that! So if I can bring it back, I'll be a happy decorator! I thought about one of those hose boxes that doubles as a table, but we had one of those before, and well, I just didn't want that. I mean really, is it so hard to grab the hose when you need it? I think not! Put it in the damn garage!

I hit up 2 Ross's, Lowes, Hobby Lobby, Target and even my most hated store - Walmart! I cut a few corners from my original design idea, like a smaller area rug, no ceramic garden table, no planter box and no wreath. But I am hoping I can add a few of those a bit later.

I really wanted to go red white and blue for the design, but I didn't want it to scream super patriotic or 4th of July.  I don't know why, I'm just not a themey decorator. The wall art has burnt red, green and turquoise, so I wanted to try to incorporate that in somehow, so I wouldn't have to change that. I went with a red and white striped carpet and a red flower pot. Then I added cushions in navy blue and turquoise pillows. The front door mat, has all the colors including green, so it was a perfect way to use all the colors and tie it all together. I'm not sure how I feel about the flower on the chalkboard, but I want to hide the hook. Any ideas? Maybe I should just let the hook show? The flower stands out a little more than I want.

I'm so glad I finally made this update. I actually sat out here yesterday and ate lunch out here. I won't be embarrassed when people come to my door either. Good thing, I have about 15-20 ladies coming to my house tonight for Bunco!

A Day in The Life - Insta Recap & Beyond

I take pictures of everything! I don't know if it's because I can or if at the moment, I think, "I'm totally going to share this!" But not all of it makes it online, well that is until now! How about a mid week recap of the last week?

Last Thursday was a pretty chill day. Well as chill as a day can be around here. I hit Kohl's during lunch and spent an hour trying on items from the Peter Som for Kohl's collaboration. OMG how I love this collab! I already did a blog post on this, so you know I feel about the items I tried on, but if not, head here to see what I thought.

Friday was insanely busy. It all started when a friend invited me for a lunch time paddle. We took the SUP's (Stand Up Paddleboards) to a quiet area of the river and the manatee came around wanting to get pet! It is crazy, they are like big puppies, but it's illegal to touch the 500+ lb sea cows, so we did our best to avoid them, even though they kept coming up to a friend's board almost insisting on being pet. Can you see it just under the surface?

There were portions of our trail that we had to sit on the SUP's because we just couldn't get under the trees in the mangroves. But what a beautiful and peaceful lunch break with the girls.

Once I got home, I had to rush around at the office, and then took the girls for some mommy/daughter/daughter/daughter time. Kat had her prom on Saturday and since she needed a pedi for prom, we figured we'd join her! WAHOO! Kizzle and Coco are making faces for the camera! Got to love them!

Once the pedi's were done and the girl's were situated it was off to a local bird sanctuary for an adult only Easter Egg hunt. Something about adults running for Easter Eggs filled with prizes or alcohol seems a little off, but it was for a good cause, and we had fun!

And that was just Friday! Saturday I woke up and had to run around a bit and get things ready since I was going to be doing Kat's hair, nails and makeup for prom as well as the makeup and nails of one of Kizzle's friends. I decided the best thing to do, would be to wear a comfy maxi dress to take me through the day. This maxi dress from Express is on serious rotation in my closet right now! I have worn it 4 times in 2 weeks!

Kat ready for prom! Look at my baby, all grown up! She looked beautiful! I can't believe she is graduating high school next month!

While taking her prom pics, we spotted dolphin on the water! No matter how many times I see them, it never gets any less awesome!

Sunday I went shopping with some friends. My girl, Pam, had to check out the Peter Som for Kohl's collab, so back to Kohl's I went. I took the opportunity to try on pieces I was second guessing and got to play dress up with my friends. Another friend needed a dress for a specific occasion she had coming up and we took it as an opportunity to give her a wardrobe update. She dresses great already, but we wanted her to amp it up some more. We spent 4 hours in Kohl's!

I tried on a few dresses as potentials for Kat's graduation. I really loved the Jennifer Lopez dress on the left, but it's a bit much for a HS graduation that takes place on the football field! The dress on the right by Vera Wang was a much better option. Except bleachers and white sweater dress seems dangerous. The search continues.

I had errands to do and while at Target, I came across this RE beach chair. OMG! A beach chair you could lay down in? YES! I needed this! I had to test it out in store! LOL!

After being gone all day, Zero decided he should punish me. He was home with John all day, yet, since he is MY baby, he taught me a lesson! The little bugger!

Zero was so happy when Monday came around and it was just the two of us heading to the office to work alone together all day. He's seriously smiling at the thought! HA!

Just had to take a pic of the flowers currently in my living room. Publix puts flowers on sale for 3 bunches for $12, so every few weeks or so, I buy some fresh flowers for the house. It's a cheap fix that always makes the living room stand out and smell great!

Early Tuesday morning at 3AM. John and I decideded to set the alarm to catch the lunar eclipse. So worth waking up for!

But come time to wake up for the day, the last thing I wanted to think about was getting dressed! Good thing I grabbed the short version of the maxi dress from Express. I threw that on with a jean jacket I got at Express when I was in my late 20's. (I'll be 40 in August!) The jacket still looks pretty new too! I grabbed a Dunkies iced coffee and went to work!

Alyssa ended up coming to help out at the office and we started prepping polishes ordered during the pre-sale so far. I can't believe this collection is so close to selling out! I wonder if we'll sell out again during this month's pre-sale event? That will be crazy awesome! I ended up working until about 7:30 last night. Today is another adventure. Another busy day at the office, a friend's Birthday dinner and our Google Hangout! I can't wait! I hope to "see" you all online tonight!
