Zebra Stripe Mani Ready for Spring

Have you ever had one of those weeks? This is that week for me! It has just had the craziest, oddest things happening. A test of wills or strength? I don't know, but I am just amazed at how relaxed I can be during tense situations now. In the past I would not have been handling this week the way I am now. But really, you don't want to hear about that craziness, so let's move on to nails.

I posted a picture last weekend by Youtuber KiraKiraNails. She used Faded, Tempest and Nevermore for her mani and her accent nails were dotted. I can't get that mani out of my mind. I still plan on doing a more similar mani to hers in the future, but I ended up taking a different turn and it inspired me for today's mani.

I used Scandalous, Devious Nature, Enticing and Captivated for my mani.

I used Nail Vinyls for my Zebra stripe accent nails. These nail vinyls made it so easy for someone like me who is not so good at free hand designs. So excited to have these in my nail art arsenal.

I am so ready for Spring and Summer, and this mani is so Spring to me!

The combination of these colors worked great for this mani. I don't want to take it off! I love that it is subtle and attention getting all at the same time.

I'd love to see the mani's you come up with using our products. If you use Cult Nails for a mani or review us on your blog or Youtube, make sure you email us a link, tag us on Facebook or share it with us on Instagram or Twitter! I love sharing your work and the inspiration you give me for my mani's too!

In other good news, if you haven't heard, we now have a loyalty program! WAHOO! What does that mean? It means if you shop with us and log into your account, you will get points for every dollar spent. Once you reach 250 points, you will get $25! As a plus side, by going to your account and activating your rewards account, we will give you 20 points to help you along the way! And if you have been good and logging into your account to make your purchases, you will find that any order you made since January has earned you points! WAHOO! (We were still working on that when it launched, so if you didn't see those points when we announced the program, you should see them now.)

As an added bonus, we now have a referral program too! What does that mean? When you log into your account, there should be a refer a friend option. You can email it, tweet it, Facebook it, or blog it. Any new customer that uses your unique referral code will receive $12 off a $24 purchase. This is good for new, 1st time customers only, but what a great offer to recruit new Cult members! (insert evil Cult leader laugh here) What's in it for you? Well you get a $5 credit added to your account to spend on a future purchase. Nail painting party at your place! Woot!

We are so excited about these two programs and can't wait to hear your feedback. Tell us what you like or don't like. We created this based on request, so we can always make enhancements as we go. To kick off the fun and shake off the heebie jeebies that seem to have followed me this week, I'd love to do a sale. Let's see if I can think of a good one for you and create something fun for the weekend.

As a mini bonus, just because you guys are awesome, leave a comment on this post or on FB letting me know what you think of my mani, KiraKiraNails mani, our new loyalty program or a sale idea by 5pm EST Friday Feb 28th, 2014 and I will randomly pick a winner to receive a goodie box from us! Let the games begin!

Mini Bathroom Update With Apothecary Jars

I had these large apothecary jars from a party that I had where I filled them with candy. I had no where to put these jars after the party. I figured eventually I would use them again for another party, but then while looking through the Pottery Barn catalog a few weeks ago, I saw that they had these apothecary jars featured in a bathroom with some sea sponge, bath salt and soap bars. I knew immediately that I was going to do this in my bathroom!

I had these square drawers in there near my bathtub already. But the top of this was always a mess. I had my razor, shampoo, conditioner and magazines thrown on the top. I hated the eyesore. The drawers contained various samples I accumulated along the way. I finally went in and cleaned out the samples and sent a bunch off to friends. Then I made the top drawer for my essentials and another drawer for the magazines I love reading when I take a hot bath.

Because I was always throwing my shampoo and wet razors on top of the drawers, the top had seen better days. I grabbed some shelf liner and put it on the top to dress it up. Since it is contact paper, it will take to getting wet a bit better as well. I then put some bath salts and bubble bars in two of the jars, both products that I already use. Since I use gel soap, the bubble bars made more sense for me, since I always have a few. I had to go out and get some sea sponge, and I added a small candle. I now love how it looks!

Time Traveler and Bitten

Sometimes I intend on doing an amazing nail art mani, and some times they don't work out like I want. This was one of those nights. In the end I opted for some rhinestones on an accent nail and called it good.

What I did love was the combination of Bitten over Time Traveler. It gave it a deeper vibe and in real life, the blue of Time Traveler shined through.

I really liked how it came out in the end, and sometimes, simple is just better. I haven't used Bitten in such a long time. I forgot how much I love it!

Phyrra's Pretty Little Elixir Hair Masque

Cruelty Free Beauty Blogger and queen of multi tonal hair color, Phyrra, created Phyrra's Pretty Little Elixir Hair Masque. When I heard about the product, I immediately ordered it. I ordered it for several reasons. 1. I am a huge fan of her blog and have been since before Cult Nails. 2. I have had the opportunity to meet her on several occasions and we have now become friends.  3. As a blogger trying to establish a brand, I love supporting other bloggers I love, especially if I've followed them and trust their opinion.  With all these factors, there was no way I wasn't going to be one of the first in line to get my hands on her hair masque!

What exactly is so special about her hair masque? Here's what her site says:

The Miracle Moisture Masque for Hair
Transform chemically-treated hair from dry and dull to smooth and sexy.Phyrra's Pretty Little Elixir has the right cocktail of ingredients reduce the signs of external damage and return hair to its lustrous, soft state.Cruelty Free and Vegan!
Ingredients
Aqua, Quaternium-91, (softening, hair color protection, Behentrimonium Chloride (heat protection and repair, Myristyl Myristate (hydration without weighing your hair down, Cetearyl Alcohol, Hydrolyzed, Wheat Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Phenoxyethanol (the preservative), Ethylhexylglycerin, Fragrance

This formula is sulfate free, paraben free, cruelty free, vegan and gluten free.
Gluten = glutenin + gliadin + starch. You can take wheat, isolate out these 3 components, and then it is gluten-free wheat!

Now that I had her hair masque in hand, I couldn't wait to try it. As many of you know I have lightened my hair considerably in recent months. What you may not know is that I have a few dry spots on one side. I have tried several hair care products and while I liked some, I couldn't wait for Phyrra's hair masque to arrive. I washed my hair using my normal shampoo, which is currently Davine's. I then used Phyrra's Pretty Little Elixir. I usually use about the size of 2 quarters for my conditioner, so I did the same with the hair elixir. My first impression once in my hand was that it was thin and watery, but smelled amazing. The first ingredient is water, so perhaps this should not have been a surprise. But all my hair conditioners are thick and creamy, and hair masques typically are even creamier. So this was a bit of a surprise. I was instantly nervous, because now I had a damp mass of tangled hair on my head and I did not see how this conditioner was going to work through that.  I applied it to the tips of my hair and worked my way up to my roots. I used a wide tooth comb to run the elixir through my hair according to the instructions and to my surprise the comb spread the conditioner easily and my tangles just fell away. I was seriously impressed with how fast the conditioner penetrated my hair and removed the tangles. I wrapped my hair in a towel and let it set for 10 minutes. I then rinsed my hair and dried and styled it with the blow dryer.

I didn't use any other styling products in my hair, because I wanted to truly test this product on its own, without any other product interfering with how it worked. I immediately ran my fingers through my freshly dried hair and over the dry spots. I was pleasantly surprised when even my dry spots felt smooth. I could feel the split end areas still, but it was a vast improvement in feel and appearance right away. My hair felt light and not weighed down at all. My hair was shiny and silky without the use of oil and the smell was beyond amazing. The smell of this elixir is warm and inviting and a little bit sexy while still smelling clean. I fell in love with the smell. I had to email Phyrra to ask what the scent was, because I couldn't quite place it. She said it is Marula, which is an exotic fruit. Let me tell you, it smells divine!

I wash my hair every 3-4 days. I had to train it to go this long between washes without getting all greasy. I used to wash my hair every day, which is bad. Washing your hair every day makes your head produce more oils to combat the oils you are striping from it, which means you then get sucked into washing every day. So it is a slow process to go from every day washes to going a few days in between, but if I want to keep this lighter color and my hair from drying out, I need to keep days in between my washes. I tell you this, because sometimes when I change my shampoo or conditioner, I realize I can't make it the 3-4 days between washes and have to either train my hair for that product or realize that the product I'm using is just not going to work for me. I washed my hair and used Phyrra's Pretty Little Elixir on Wednesday and made it comfortably without washing my hair again until Saturday.

My Final Thoughts:

I think the consistency will take a little getting used to, but so didn't using an argan oil in my hair and as part of my facial cleansing routine. So different isn't necessarily bad. I love the smell and I love how my hair looked and felt using it. The down side for me is the cost, at $39.99 for 8 oz. this is a bit harder to justify buying. I won't typically spend more than $20 on a hair conditioner or hair masque. If I use this once a week I anticipate that this bottle will last me about 2 1/2 to 3 months. While I find the product to be amazing, the price definitely is a consideration.

If you have dry hair, or are a hair coloring fiend like me, this might be worth checking in to. You can check it out here. I wish Phyrra all the success with this product and hope to see more great things in the near future!

Luck Doesn't Happen to People Who Don't Take Chances

One day while sitting at home, I was watching Oprah Winfrey and she said "Luck doesn't happen to people who don't take chances". That has stuck with me ever since. Whenever I think of taking any risk, I hear that in the back of my head. Just think about it for a second, how can anything happen without you taking some action to try to make it happen.

Fast forward a few years and here I am yet again watching another Oprah moment about Vision Boards. If you follow my Facebook or Instagram, you already know the story. I posted quite a lengthy post last night, and the response has been overwhelming, so I am interrupting today's regularly scheduled blog post to expand that post. Here I am watching Oprah and these women create vision boards on these big poster boards and while I was sitting there, thinking, are these women serious? I also kept thinking back to the collages I made when I was a teenager. You know the ones -  you find all these pretty pictures in magazines and collage them together like a poster? I couldn't have been the only one who did that, right? I thought hmm maybe there is something to this visualizing thing. Maybe I will create a board.

I decided to make one using Power Point. I started finding images for healthy family and life and to be more Earth friendly, you know, safe things. Things that were obvious. Then I decided to put a picture of someone getting a manicure and a stack of money. I had finally, after 10 long years finished my bachelors degree and had a great job in Human Resources. But I still wanted to own a salon and do nails. I still wanted to be my own boss. As much as my job should have made me happy, it just wasn't what I longed to do. It was a safe job with a good paycheck. I worked with amazing people, but it wasn't my dream.

I put a shack on the beach. We were living in VA at the time, right near the Potomac River, in this tiny little town that was so small, it wasn't even on a map.  I am just not cut out for small town living. I couldn't wait for John to get the next assignment and I wanted to be on the beach sooo bad. John was in Greenland at the time and we were waiting for our next assignment. He updated his base preferences to FL and MA bases. (We're from MA, so if we had a shot at getting our preference, we wanted to be on the beach or near family for a few years.)

Lastly I put a cartoon of a group of friends. That was probably the hardest thing to put on the board. It meant really facing my feelings. (I hate facing my feelings or anything remotely sappy. Yuck!) It's not that I was friendless, but in a way I was. Every friend I had near me had been friends I made through John. They were all the wives of people he worked with. I was busy working and in school and with my kids, that I made very little time to make my own friends. I am also quite shy if you don't know me. Put me in a room with strangers and I freak. I wouldn't talk to anyone, unless someone came up to me. Once you knew me, all bets were off, you couldn't shut me up! Still can't. I so desperately wanted to make my own lasting friendships. I wanted someone I could call when I was having a bad day or when something awesome happened. I wanted girls nights. I didn't always want to be the evil mean HR lady or mom.

That was 6 years ago. Yesterday while going through emails and comments, I saw a trend. So many people were looking at my life and saying, I wish I had your… You're so lucky you… I wish… You're so lucky… I wish… You're so lucky… And I thought, wow, is that what people see? Did I really make it happen? I thought, if only you knew how LUCK happened. I took chances, I put myself out there and luck happened! We got assigned to FL near a beach! After 15 years of willing it to happen, after putting it on a vision board and actually visualizing it, it happened! I couldn't get to FL fast enough! I mean, I really couldn't! I quit my job about 6 months before we were set to move to FL, I had John jump through hoops that would allow me to leave VA early for FL. (Normally the military member will finish their remote assignment, come home, and pack up and move their family together. I did it while John was still in Greenland.) I took care of everything on my own and then John came home for a visit from Greenland and drove with us to FL, and then he had to go back to Greenland and I was on my own in a strange state with my kids and no friends around and no job! I had a cousin who lived an hour away and just knowing she was there helped so much. I was basically on my own for 6 more months until John's assignment in Greenland was up. To this date, that has probably been my biggest challenge. Being on my own like that taught me some major independence. I am so thankful for that experience now. It was scary, but exciting. And did I mention, I am 1/2 mile from the beach?! When it all got to be too much, I would just go take a walk on the beach and watch all my stresses just wash away. Oddly, as scary as it was, I never felt more at home. I never felt like I belonged in a place more. This is were I was meant to be. This vision board was working! WAHOO! That was almost 5 years ago now.

Then I joined Meetup.com. It is a site where you can meet people with shared interests. I joined when I moved to FL. But for the first 6 months, I didn't go to any meet ups. The thought of going to anything that was being held by strangers on the internet felt so strange. Especially for someone like me that has difficulty talking to strangers. I waited until John got home from Greenland. Then I cautiously went to a meet up. I think only 3 other girls went to that one. I had fun. They were nice. I could do this. About an hour after I got home, I got a friend request on FB from one of the girls and it said we had a friend in common. WHAT? How? I didn't know anyone here! Turns out she grew up with one if John's good friends that he made in basic training. What are the odds? I kept going to meet ups and now I have so many friends made through that group and through the people I have met. Women like me, with interests like mine. I always have someone I can call and meet for lunch, dinner, drinks, shopping, you name it. Don't get me wrong, I am still shy(ish) and still struggle with that part of me. I still find myself pulling back and not seeing anyone for weeks at a time. My friends get that about me though and they will leave me alone for a few weeks and then pull me back out. They know I need that recharge time. It's like balancing my old me with my new me.

Lastly I started the blog which led to Cult Nails. That has to be the craziest thing of all. I still struggle with not belonging in this world of amazing bloggers and business women. I still struggle with pushing myself and asserting myself on behalf of Cult Nails. I am just not out going like that. When you see me at a show, or speaking, you would never know it. I push myself, I do it and while I do it, I love every second of it! I wish that was me 100% of the time! But after each event, I always need that recharge time. To process it all, so I can do it all over again. I am still working on myself every day. I want this dream to continue so bad, that I will do whatever it takes. I'll take every up and down. I'll do it no matter how hard. Maybe one day I will feel like I belong or I made it. Or maybe it's better that I never feel like I get there, so I keep pushing myself. I've also made some amazing friends through blogging! I think some of my best friends, some of the women who get me most are other bloggers. Some I haven't met in person yet, others I get to see more often. But none the less, they are amazing and inspiring and I'm lucky to have them in my life.

I love that you guys see amazingness. It pushes me forward every day. The reality isn't always so glamourous. But I made a choice when I started my blog, that I would post positivity. I would not post negativity. I would push other women (and men) like me up and as a result push myself up. I am no different than anyone who wants or wishes. I see other bloggers, IGers, Business woman and wish and want too. And I think what did they do to get there? What can I do to get there? My post last night was because even if one of you feels like I do, dreams like I do, wishes like I do, to know that you just have to take a chance and LUCK will find you. Because you see, luck isn't really luck at all, it's your willingness to put yourself out there and take that chance to receive whatever is coming your way. I fully believe in visualizing yourself in the moment of whatever it is you want now. Put it out there, picture yourself there. Take the first step towards getting you there and watch what happens. Reach out to people you may not have thought to reach out to. (I so need to remember this one!) Make it happen. Skip over all the negativity and focus on the positive. Take a chance, you got this!

Today's Nail Look

This week is going by so fast! I can't believe it's already Wednesday. I guess because the week is "shortened" due to President's Day. But since I worked on Monday, that can't be it. I actually wore this outfit last week and just haven't had a chance to post it yet.

I stayed up late doing my nails last night. I'm not sure on this nail shape. I love it, but I have had it just a few days and already it needs to be filed to maintain the shape. Bleh, I can't be bothered to actually file my nails more than once every 2 weeks at best, if I'm being honest. With the stiletto nails, I have to commit to once a week. But every few days? No thank you! I need to change these to Stiletto's soon.

I'm wearing Faded and an upcoming color. I have been wanting this color for over a year now! I finally decided to add it to the line up, but it's a toss up, Feb? March? April? May? I don't know, but eventually.

I used Nail Vinyls to achieve this look. I'm not going to talk about them much now, I want to use a few more and then do a post. So look for that soon! In the mean time you can check them out here.

Mani Monday - Eternal Love

Are you sick of the lovey dove mani's already? I so was not planning on doing another one, and this one may or may not qualify, but I'll let you decide.

I have had this Shany Plate 210 for at least a year now. It has Chinese Characters on it. Since I am not familiar with the Chinese language, I had no clue what any of these characters meant. I did a Google search and compared the symbols on my plate to what I found online. After consulting several websites, I came up with Eternal Love for my design.

Ironically Coco saw my mani and said "Mom do you have Chinese Characters on your nails?" I responded "yeah, can you guess what they say?" I was totally kidding, but she looked and said "I don't know, but it's something about love." Huh? How did she know that?! She said because she looked up the character for love and draws it all time on herself as a tattoo. Aaahhh now I see. LOL. I am still impressed.

Oh and I changed my nail shape! I was going to go with my favorite stiletto shape, but opted to keep the tips square. In person they are so square, but the photo seems to soften the look a bit. I am really digging this look. It's different, but hey I'll either go to the full stiletto or bring them back to nubs, so I'll enjoy them for now. Someone said this shape is called Squaletto. I don't like that name, so we need to think of something better. :)

I chose Ignite and Lethal for this mani. In hindsight, I should have either used Tempest for the stamping or Nevermore for the base coat. Next time.

On a side note, it's President's Day today. Which typically means amazing deals at stores. (How that happened I'll never know, but I'm not one to argue a great deal!) I love going to the outlet's every year on President's Day weekend and usually make out like a bandit. Not so much this year. I found 2 pairs of jeans from Express for $14 each, which is a great deal for their jeans, but that was really all I found that met the want and need category. But hey, that makes my wallet happy.

This morning my daughters made me wake up early to go to the beach and watch the sun rise. While I would have enjoyed an extra day to try to sleep in, since my goal this weekend was to sleep in one day and I haven't been able to do it. But I am so glad we went. Although now that we are home, they all went back to bed and I am wide awake and about to go to the office to pack orders so their ready for the post office first thing when they re-open tomorrow morning.

If you're off today, I hope you have a great day off and do something relaxing or fun!

Happy Valentine's Day!

How about one more Valentine's Day mani? After this, we can move on! I promise!

I did Free Hand dots and stamped hearts . Not my favorite or best mani. I really think I am more into just one accent nail vs all my nails designed. My tastes must be changing. I used Tempest, Evil Queen and the pink is an upcoming Spring color for March.

And in case you missed the announcement, TODAY ONLY! Buy one get one! No coupon code needed! Now isn't that better than flowers?

I Heart You!

I did a quick mani update. I went from a sexy hot mani and changed just one finger and turned it into a more traditional Valentine's Day mani. I left Kiss on my nails and just took the polish off my ring finger. I painted the ring finger in Tempest and then I topped it with Wax That. After a few minutes, I stamped some hearts on it. Done! It took all of 5 minutes to take this mani into a totally new look!

Don't forget to submit your Valentine's Day inspired mani using Cult Nails polishes today! We'll post them all on our Instagram and Facebook page on Friday and announce the winners of the upcoming Casual Elegance collection! Good luck!

What I Wore - Peter Pilotto for Target

When I can't wait to put a new item of clothing on, I know I have a winner! I forced myself to wait a day before I threw on the Peter Pilotto for Target sweatshirt. I found myself dying to wear every piece I bought with the exception of the t-shirt. I actually already returned the t-shirt. But the sweatshirt is probably my favorite piece (aside from the pants).

I've been off my game for several months on posting outfit pics. I just haven't been feeling the whole blogger style game lately. I guess I needed a break. I mean I would still get dressed decently, but I haven't had anyone around really to take pics for me and when I did, it's been too dark or I just haven't really felt like doing it or in all honesty, I was probably running late enough already. Ironically the one Target collab that I could have cared less about, is the one that brought my mo jo back.

Now I just need to remember where I put my camera and charge the battery! I used to keep my camera in my purse with me, but I stopped when I couldn't easily transfer the pictures to the Samsung phone when I had it briefly. I need to get my camera back in my bag!

But seriously, is this sweatshirt not the coolest? I really thought the prints would be overwhelming in person and even on the hanger, I wasn't too convinced. I don't tend to wear prints often and when I do they tend to be more subdued. But every so often, a print gets me! I also don't wear bright colors often. I love how vivid this piece is while still being wearable and somewhat toned down. It matches my personality perfectly! I just wish that this was a thin material instead of a sweatshirt so I could get some real wear out of it. But with FL Summer weather just around the corner, I'll be lucky to wear it a few more times before next Nov. As it is, I was pushing it weather wise today. The weather high was supposed to be 73, turned out to be 77. Oops!

I got all artsy with my Rebecca Minkoff bag. I didn't want to set it on the sand, so this nearby driftwood did the trick. A friend picked this bag up for me at a sample sale in NY. I have been lusting after this bag and wanted it in grey so bad, but I could never seem to find it online. I was so excited when she found it for me and at 50% off! SCORE!

I wanted to wear the sweatshirt a bit differently than with the expected black skirt or jeans look. I have plenty of time to rock those looks! I felt the tuxedo striped capri's from Express did the trick. I really liked these two pieces together. The sweatshirt is still available in limited sizes online, but when I do a Find in Store it seems most stores still have several available. So if you're looking, don't give up hope. Also orders have started arriving from those who placed orders online, so now is the time to check your stores out for returns. I've had success in the past getting most of the items I wanted through returns. You just have to be vigilant and perhaps make Target your destination for all your errands for a few weeks. ha! You can also check the customer service desk and fitting room for returns before they make it back to the floor. But shhh don't tell anyone my secrets or I won't keep having as much success in the future.
